INTERNATIONAL BREAKTHROUGH ELS MOMMERS

Saba resident Els Mommers was invited to present her work at the International Quilt Festival in Mexico City. Entries should be based on the motto: “Endemic flora and fauna Mexico”. Els selected the Mexican tree frog sitting on an enlarged banana leaf as her principal motif. She worked several months on this quilt with the result, that her entry was awarded the FIRST PRIZE.

In Mexico, Els also organized two workshops for enthusiastic Mexicans. One workshop was devoted to quilting the national flower of the country, the dahlia. A Russian delegation, headed by the Consul of Russia, also showed great interest in Els’ work. They invited her to an exhibition in Moscow next year.

Els Mommers is a long term resident of Saba. She was ten years art teacher at the Saba Comprehensive School, then owner of the El Momo Folk Art store in Windwardside. Since 2008, she works in her studio on Troy Hill creating Art Quilts. Not without success. Her art is in great demand in the art-gallery ‘five square miles’ in Windwardside, in particular, her Saban landscapes. In 2016, she she won the 2nd price as part of the International Quilt Exposition in Beaujolais (France).

Saban artists perform very well on the international scene. Els lives next door to painter Heleen Cornet who also enjoys a lot of international recognition.
