Public Entity Saba looking in alternative measures to control mosquitos and the diseases they spread

As the eradication of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito remains a pressing issue in our region, The ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is providing additional support for mosquito control to the Caribbean Netherlands.

With the assistance of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Bes Islands are embarking on a joint program called Mobocon (Mosquito-borne disease control). With this initiative, we all hope to strengthen our Departments of Agriculture, Hygiene & Vector Control to focus on a sustainable integrated management of the Aedes Aegypti Mosquito. The Aedes Aegypti mosquito is the mosquito that can spread dengue, chikungunya, Zika, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other diseases.

The Executive Council of The Public Entity Saba is aware of reports stating that mosquitos will be imported to Saba. An evaluation has been carried out by The RIVM on the safety of using genetically modified mosquitos. However, no decisions have been made by the Executive Council of Saba at this time.
