Saba to participate in Beach Clean-up Tour

Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) and Save Our Sharks Saba are teaming up with North Sea Foundation in contributing to their annual Boskalis Beach Clean-up tour of the entire coastline of the Netherlands and of the Dutch Caribbean islands.
This event takes place on Saba at Cove Bay, the coast near Fort Bay from the “Pond” to the end of the harbour, and also at Ladder Bay on Friday, August 11, between 10:00am and 4:00pm. Everyone is welcome to volunteer. Garbage bags and gloves will be distributed by SCF.

In the Netherlands, the shoreline between the beaches of Castricum to Wijk aan Zee in the western province of Noord-Holland will be cleaned up on Sunday, August 13.

A recent study estimated that, based on weight, by 2050 there is more plastic in the oceans than fish. Right now, more than five trillion plastic pieces are estimated to be floating around in the oceans. As large plastic pieces are broken down into smaller plastic particles, they are taken up into the marine food chain together with other toxic chemicals. These chemicals concentrate in the top predators, often being sharks and commercial species, such as tuna and swordfish.
For this reason, Save our Sharks and SCF are teaming up with North Sea Foundation in their annual Beach Clean-up Tour.

St. Maarten will also be taking part in the beach clean-up. On Sunday, August 13, volunteers will be cleaning up Simpson Bay beach between 8:00am and 11:00am. The clean-up is scheduled to start at Karakter Beach Bar.
