Sea & Learn 2019 – week 4

Every year during the month of October, Sea & Learn hosts more than a dozen world-renowned scientific experts for a month-long environmental awareness event. There are many exciting activities and ways to learn from casual evening presentations at local hotels and restaurants to hands-on field projects and interactive activities for students at the local schools. All events are held on the rainforest island paradise of Saba in the Dutch Caribbean. Saba is called the Unspoiled Queen for its pristine nature and vibrant biodiversity from mountainous cloudforest to its deepwater pinnacles. Sea & Learn is made possible by generous support from Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and local sponsors in the Saba community. To learn more visit the Sea & Learn website at www.seaandlearn.org.

Program week 4

Monday, October 21

1pm-4pm @ Fort Bay Harbor, Oil Spill Simulation Dive

Join Jim Oris at one of our dive sites to conduct an oil toxicity test and measure UV penetration to demonstrate potential impacts of oil’s chemicals in the sea. Be part of a scientific paper that will include the data obtained on these dives!

5:30pm Presentation @ Lollipop’s Restaurant & Inn

We all know “oil and water do not mix”. Do you know that fish get sunburned as a result of exposure to oil?  Jim Oris will share the short and long term impacts of oil to the marine life and us.

Wednesday, October 23

5:30pm Presentation @ Scout’s Place

Ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what was out there? Sidney Lower will give an introductory explanation on how galaxies are formed. You’ll never look at the night sky the same way again.

Friday, October 25

5:30pm Presentation @ The Hideaway Bar & Restaurant

Saba’s own, Dahlia Hassell, will share why coral restoration matters and how you can have a role in the future of our reefs!

Saturday, October 26

9am-4pm @ Fort Bay Harbor, Shark Tagging Dives

Get ready to see how scientists like Chelsea Black collect samples from live sharks for research purposes!

9:30-10:30pm @ Sea & Learn Tent, Star-gazing Tour

Enjoy a quiet, dark night under the stars as Sidney Lower points out different constellations and other galactic phenomena.

Sunday, October 27 – FINAL NIGHT!

5:30pm Presentation @ Chez Bubba Bistro

Chelsea Black will give a fin-tastic talk about the microbiomes of three shark species and how they play an important role in shark health. Saving sharks may even save ourselves!
